Sweet Finish

October Rose
20 x 16"
by Ilene Atkins
So I finally finished this October Rose quilt. I decided along the way that it needed a border. I wouldn't usually add a border, but I think this one was asking for one. I ended up cutting out all the embroidery and appliqueing it to a green batik I had on hand. As an added bonus, it turned out a little puffy and looks three dimensional. This quilt was a hard-won finish, and I like the final results.

  1. That's really beautiful Ilene. Thanks for sharing. I came here from the Fibre Artists Journey linky party and what a surprise to discover that we're practically neighbours... in more ways than one. I'm now living near Horseshoe Valley and I grew up in Weyburn SK after my grandparents sold the farm in Kisby.

  3. Hi, Ilene-
Your October Rose is really lovely. I understand the issues of doing the intense embroidery and getting distortion. My best results have been to use several layers of stabilizer and also hoop it while I stitch. But it can also make it rather stiff, so you have to weigh out the effect you want with the process. I also used applique-ing the finished embroidery onto a background for my Salsa blocks and think it is a good compromise. Thanks for linking up at Fiber Artist Journey!
